Why Can’t I Use Silicone Lube with Silicone Toys?

Or: When Two Silicones Love Each Other a Little Too Much...

We get it. You finally found a toy you actually like. It's sleek, it hits the spot, and can always be relied on. You light a candle, dim the lights, reach for your fave bottle of lube, and—pause.

Wait. Can you use that lube?

If it’s silicone-based and your toy is silicone too, the answer is: probably not.

So, what’s the big deal?

Silicone lube and silicone toys don’t always play nice together. In fact, they can mess each other up in ways that are... well, not so sexy.

Too much of a good thing (in silicone’s case) can cause a breakdown in texture. The ingredients in silicone lube can bond with the surface of your silicone toy, making it tacky, gummy, or even permanently damaged.

What actually happens?

When you pair silicone with silicone, especially high-grade lube with soft silicone toys, the lube can start to break down the toy’s surface. It might not be obvious right away—but over time, it can become:

  • Sticky or warped
  • Dull or discoloured
  • More prone to trapping bacteria (a hard no from us)

This isn’t just a vibe killer—it’s a hygiene issue. And once the damage is done, there’s no real way to fix it.

How do I know what lube to use?

Simple rule:
Silicone toy = water-based lube.
That’s it. That’s the tweet.

Water-based lubes are gentle, versatile and won’t mess with your toy’s finish. Bonus: they’re also condom-friendly and easy to clean up.

Want a silicone-based lube for those extra-long, extra-slippery sessions? No problem. Just save it for non-silicone toys (or skin-on-skin fun). (Uberlube is a personal favourite silicone lube of mine, but we'll talk more about that one later)

But what if I really want to use silicone lube?

If your toy’s a keeper, why risk it?

TL;DR?

  • Don’t mix silicone lube with silicone toys unless you like sticky surprises.
  • Water-based lube is your go-to BFF for silicone gear.
  • Read the labels—and give your pleasure products the care they deserve.

Look after your toys, and they’ll look after you. 💕
